Peak a.....choo choo!

We have an adorable book that Jane loves called "Peak a Who?" And the funniest page has a "peak a....choo choo!" Which always makes me think of Picachu. Anyway this fun page introduced the adventure of our family photo we took a few weeks ago.

Between Rigby and Rexburg you pass an amazing train bridge. It's dark, is against beautiful landscape, and is the neatest style! Ever since I was in College at BYU-Idaho I've wanted to take a photo on that bridge! So, on our drive up to Ashton to visit my brother and his awesome wife we decided to do one. Paige had gone duck hunting her first time and they offered some meat (James loves Duck meat!) to our family. We love going up and being with them and hearing all their fun stories. And finally on the pretty drive we were going to stop at THE BRIDGE!

The train bridge is over a beautiful part of the Snake River and you have to climb up a little bank to get onto the tracks and then to the bridge. We had forgotten to pack the tripodand so James ran down to the car and grabbed the stroller to use in its place. So there we were with a baby a stroller and us happily trying to get some family photos together in a beautiful fall day. We checked in the camera to see if a train was nearing. There was a bright light super far away and James thought it looked like the curve of the freeway shining from the setting sun. So you can guess what's coming. As we are setting up another shot James turns to see three lights coming our way....meaning a TRAIN!! So I quickly grab Jane, her cheerio bottle and start to jump over the beams to get off the bridge. James grabs the camera and stroller and starts booking it down the hill. We all got off the track and no more than 20 seconds later the train zoomed by us. It was a engine with two cars, so not a long one. We pulled our hands doing the train whistle sign and the conductor CHOO-CHOOED at us.

Wheew. It will definitely go down in history as the most
adventurous and crazy family photos we may ever take!

Embroidered Hog

I made my very first embroidery piece this past month and it was so fun! It's little Lucy the Hog. I have a great love for hedgehogs. Ever since 4th grade I've wanted one of these prickly friends. My teacher Mrs. Murikami had a class pet hedgehog that was free to roll and play around the classroom. I fell in love!

So this little project became a little birthday gift to a fellow hedgehog lover, my sweet sister in law Mary-Katherine. And what perfect timing for she just got her very own hedgehog last week for her birthday. So her little Pearl (pictured above!) now has her own self portrait embroidery 😉. Pretty special and fun for me to give my very first embroidered piece to these two!

Spicy Taquitos

We had a divine dinner this evening. I had found this recipe among the many 1,000's of yummies in Pinterest and have been anxiously waiting to make it! Spanish meals are always among our favorite and if you add jalapeños and cilantro its a match made in heaven for James! This amazing taquitos recipe with its green ranch dressing is a dish to make your taste buds HAPPY! The only additional ingredient I added differently then he recipe was tomatoes. We still have many fresh ones lingering from our garden and so I had to include them. We enjoyed this meal so much!! I have never cooked with tomatios before and that was really fun!

Also, I have decided that I LOVE crock pot meals!!!! They always turn out delicious and are so easy! So I'm going to be using ours even more often then I have been. I'm a big fan of the "set it and forget it" as James calls it. Yum yum!

YES-YES

Today marks the day that I gave my Mr James a "yes-yes." He was a patient and determined young man when I returned from my mission and he was ready to marry me. James had asked me to marry him a little over a month earlier to marry him and I gave him the reply of, "YES...but not yes-yes!" I explained to him that I really did want to marry him and so he had a yes, but there were still a few things I had to make sure I was alright with and that we needed to talk about more until he got a yes yes. And so we took the time to talk about these things and to help me feel confident and prepared to spend eternity with this great man.

I think oftentimes in life we need a little period to solidify our yes's into yes-yes's. Oftentimes in this hustlebustle world we have to make decisions on the fly, but VERY important decisions should have careful thought. I want my children to think for themselves, to learn reasoning skills, to feel confident in the planning and preparations they make, to know it's ok to wait, to be good decision makers and first and foremost to know that their happiness is key in this life. There is a beautiful scripture that says, "For behold this is my work and my glory- to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man." God want's us to have eternal happiness, it His greatest work and glory. He is the ultimate example of a loving and righteous parent.

How grateful I am that James had the patience to allow me to work out my happiness and to know that my yes-yes really meant YES for eternity! We have been so blessed to be uplifted through storms that rage at us in our marriage. Our home has a great peace, that is what I prayed for. I knew that life would not be a bed of roses for us, but I knew that our home could be a blossoming rose of strength if we were a team. This is a major reason for our Family Motto. As a family, as a couple, as individuals strengthening our relationship with our Heavenly Father we must be tight. That is where peace and strength come from in a family. Being close. Trusting one another. Lifting one another.

And so on this beautiful October day I am reminded of how grateful I am for saying Yes-Yes two years ago to my own James Franklyn Spencer! Here's to keeping that Yes-Yes alive and well!!!

Grammy's Birthday

"I wish every child in the whole wide world had a Grandmother just like YOU!"

Today marks another year the world is blessed with the life of Barbara Sorensen Cahoon! My mother celebrates her birthday today and we wish we could be there to give her a kiss and hug! I miss her every day! Especially when I see or hear of women hanging out with their moms on a regular basis. She is one of my very favorite people to be with and sometimes I just really would love to have her over to bake cookies, go on walks, visit the temple with, have tea parties with Jane....the list is endless of the things I would love to do with her weekly! But alas a 12 hour drive and a few states does not permit that dream! So instead for this year we gifted her a walk with us :). Jakes filmed and played the piano and I sang a tune my Grandma, Barb's mother, wrote in the LDS Children's Hymnbook. And Jane was the star of the film :). We love teaching her about the importance of family and instilling our family motto as a family to be "tight like into a dish." And to achieve that caring about each other sincerely and frequently is so important. My mother has taught me that, and so much more!

Barb Cahoon is a woman of greatness and I love and admire her a great deal! She is a wonderful cook, knows how to make life meaningful, loves chocolate, works harder than many women I know, gives service with a grateful heart, has great faith, will roll down hills with me, takes her children on one on one special occasions (NYC, the WA coast and my PA mission are among my top faves!) and is just plain old wonderful. Happy birthday to the greatest Barbara I know!! We love you Grammy/Mom!

The Flood

There is a flood happening and I feel we all know it but don't take heed. It's not a flood of water, it's a flood of mass media. I have been thinking much lately as I have been on my phone a bit more while feeding a baby these past 9 months and how I feel after I'm on the media traps on there. Floods can be a blessing and/or a curse. In the matter of our media filled world, how do we choose to display ourselves and what do we choose to spend our time on? I know that when I choose to just update our family blog or go in to make a kind comment to friend or family I feel much better about my use of time then endless scrolling the feeds of others "famed" lives. But I to get caught in the flood and find that afterwards I feel like my self esteem lacks just a little bit more. Thoughts can creep in like; I'm not a good enough wife or mom, I am a housekeeping disaster, I can't travel the world, I'm not beautiful, the list can go on and on with how media can twist your thoughts and the reality of life. Or, it can be a fun and exciting time to catch up and be excited about the happiness and explorations of friends and family which I love! It is wonderful to see how dear people are doing. However, how much of your time is spent in that "catching up" that isn't face to face? The result of getting flooded over with mass media can either eat away at your self or your time.

As I roamed the endless Facebook feed one early...late...hour I shouldn't be up but was tending the needs of a teething little one I saw a great post by a friend. She had put up some "real" family photos. The ones where your hair blows over your kids face, or your two year olds screaming or you are all blinking but the baby. She commented that a friend had told her all Facebook/Social Media sites are a lie of reality. And so she put the not so "perfect" photos up with the nice ones as well. Nobody looks perfect all the time. But sometimes that is the result of this dreadful flood: vanity, fake reality, obsession with likes/praise, and sincere communication lacks when you're only caring about the next selfie.

I am not saying go hide in a hermit hole, never take photos, and don't feel good about yourself or your family or your prideful....but why do you post what you post? Is it for the right reasons? Or is it to gratify a low self esteem with pride in all your likes and comments? Is it to plaster the world with selfies of yourself? Because do you love yourself without the need of social media? If not, put down the phone, leave the trap, free your fingers and find time to get to know yourself, develop real actual talents and explore this beautiful world we live in! When you step away from the screens it allows you to have real interactions with the world around you.

Don't get me wrong, I am one who succumbs to the media flood every so often. How freeing it is though to not have to check up on everyone's life's and as a result feel less beautiful, like your life is boring, that you don't matter, that you just wasted 2 hours...or whatever it can make you feel. Instead I hope we can all learn temperance and self confidence in a world that is lacking in both. Fill the flood with positivity and then get off and live life! I have a bosom friend who explained life as a harbor. We see ships come in to our harbors and some weigh anchor and stay a long time, others come in and unload their freight and leave. There comings and goings in a harbor and that's how life should be. We aren't supposed to have to keep up with everyone else's life and forget to live our own or to pay attention to the people and things that matter most. There are supposed to be some who stay in the harbor for a long time and others we are blessed to have port for just a little while. When we allow the flood of social media to envelope our lives this ebb and flow cannot happen!

So when the flood sweeps you up and you get caught in endless hours of social media...swim out and take a breath of reality. When you do join the social throng make sure you are posting for the right reasons and flood those busy internets with good! Because as I said before floods can be a huge blessing as well. Make sure you're helping it bless the world!

Love, your fellow flood swimmer

I thought this video was a sad reality of the negative of this flood we are in;

And here is one for the POSITIVE (it is related to the LDS faith specifically,
but there are MANY ways to spread positivity online);

Little Ladies Flag

Today I took my princess on a picnic by the river. She loved listening and looking at the geese and ducks. I adore how she crosses her feet!! Every time she does it I just think if her as a proper little lady!

Today I finished making the little ladies flag for her bike carriage. The little orange one that came with it flew off on one of those windy Idaho days and since then I've been meaning to make another. This special little hand sewn flag will be so fun waving in the wind as I bike with my babe.

We picked dad up from work and went to dinner at Happy Chinese downtown. It was DELISH (as you can tell :) Jane licked her plate clean!). I can't ever think of better company to go out to eat with!

Braiding

Hair braiding is quite the art. I have never quite mastered it. All the styles now are so fun but my fingers just seem to not be coordinated enough to accomplish such beautiful doos. My sweet Mr James played with my hair the other night (a very rare pleasure, I LOVE it when people play with my hair), and attempted a braid as well. The photo above displays his result.

I think I love it so much cause he did it! Looks like Jane's in bad luck with cool hairdos ;). Once her little whisps grow into a head of hair I'll have to get practicing!

General Conference

Put the "doors of your tent towards the temple" during Conference! I love this family tradition we've started. This year we decided to stay indoors and make a sheet tent.

Jane was quite intrigued by the tent and the lanterns, but she was even more entranced with the speakers and choirs of Conference. What a great and incredible blessing it is to have a living Prophet on the Earth with Apostles at his side. During two weekends a year we are able to listen to men and women who have great faith in the Lord. Receiving council and encouragement to keep the faith and to share it with others.

We ventured to the library and our local Reeds Dairy during this beautiful weekend as well. I can't pass up a fun trip to ice-cream and I love getting new books to read with my buddies!

Did you know the best way to eat a cone? Truly the best and only way is to smash it into bits and mix it on in with the creamy goodness of ice-cream! That way you've got a little crunch with your cream!

I love these two of mine so much!!! I love to watch my Mr James interact with Jane girl. He's a wonderful father and she is his mini me (in girl form ;) ). They are a true delight in my life. How grateful I am that James chose to marry me and bless me with such cute babies. And to bless our family as a worthy priesthood holder in our home. There is great humility and strength in a man who cares deeply enough about his family to hold strong to priesthood covenants. I love him for that commitment he keeps!

I loved seeing the baby animals at the dairy and especially these sibling pigs. All nestled up together! So sweet! There is such beauty in this world, pause to notice it each day!!

My Sunshine

I am so grateful for this "swingin babe" she makes me happy when skies (or life) is gray. She really is my sunshine!! We had another wild whirlwind of a week. I have had lots of church duties including getting a craft day planned, a freelance design job and a lecture to prepare on top of helping James with another busy film weekend. Feeling a bit overwhelmed and down I looked at my Jane Girl and her sweet face melted my heart and smacked a big smile on my face.

She brings such joy into my life and I am so grateful she's a part of my family!!! James had a very successful and thrilling weekend filming which made me glad that Jane and I went to support and cheer him on. That is what families all about! Support, love, sacrifice, making memories, learning with one another and lifting each other!

There is no greater joy to be found in this world than a happy family. There is no other successes that could replace a solid family. There is no better hope in this world than families founded on Christ. After such a wild week and a half I am so thankful to have the opportunity to be still and listen to talks all weekend long! General Conference happens but twice a year, and it is such a blessing. Hearing from a living prophet, apostles and righteous men and women brings such strength to the weary soul and light/sunshine to the world!
