Love Life

I absolutely love this quote from dear President Hinckley. He may possibly be one of my favorite men to walk this earth. He was a true example of a twinkle in your eye! This quote brings so much joy to my heart because it is the feelings I share and self motto I live by. In college I was quoted as saying, "I love Life!" It was in reference to what my favorite cereal was, but then it really stuck as my lifetime motto. I truly do love life. There is so much to behold, so much to learn, to experience, to love, to serve, to do.

Life is beautiful. And yes it's got it's downs, every path does. But those downs allow appreciation for the ups and teach us great lessons. What you dwell on and seek out in life is what your life will be. If you choose to have an Eyore cloud above your head you will have an Eyore life. And might I add that Eyore was still loved. Even those who choose to be grumps are still loved by family and dear friends. But their outcome of life could be much richer if they would "accentuate the positive" and strive to not seek out storms. When one dwells on the wrongs of life they pass up seeing all the blessings and great goodness in their lives. It becomes a canker to happiness.

I choose to strive to love life even when wrongs are made and storms rage. This does not mean I don't have hard days or moments of "why me!" But it does mean that I do not let them ruin my today's and carry into my tomorrows. We are taught to forgive others, to endure and to strive to put off the natural man. All these teachings are to help insure a happier life. Our Heavenly Father wants us to be happy. That is His entire plan for us! And so if we will follow His teaching and strive each day to live by this great quote we will, WILL, be happier in life. And in eternity.

Chicken Chaos

Yesterday as I was passing by my kitchen  window I saw a chicken fly by. Now I don't know about you but that is a rare sight. We've had this big stray dog roaming into our yard recently and so I thought, "oh dear did he finally get into the coop!" I went out in the yard with Jane and low and behold all the chickens were out and running about the yard.

We had cleaned their coop on Monday evening as our Family Home Evening activity and James had forgotten to close up the coop. So they were having a hey day being roam free chickens all over the yard. And man do they poop a lot! I had to walk about the whole yard scooping little chicken poops up. Jane was in second heaven chasing them and giggling away! Luckily Mister James pulled in right as we were wondering how to get them back into their coop.

He and Jane had a ball running around chasing and grabbing chickens. Jane seriously thinks they are so funny and has such adorable laughter as she runs after them! It was really cut watching daddy and daughter running about the yard trailing clucking chickens. It was a good work out to ;). I'm so happy that Jane can grow up in a "country" filled childhood. I love that she enjoys being outside, getting dirty, being active and how she loves animals.

It's so fun collecting eggs from our chickens. Hopefully they'll all still lay after this traumatic run around the yard :). Oh funny chickens!

Ps. We had a huge white egg one morning and when I cracked it it was a two yolker!!! So neat!!

Little Monsters

"Little Monsters" is the new "little piggies"! Oh how precious a little new babe is. They are the most soft, tiny, innocent, fresh and lovely things on the planet. They also are getting used to so many new things. Oftentimes as adults we expect our little ones to act and behave older then they are. We want them to calm down, tell us when they're diapers are dirty, let us know if they're hungry....etc. There is a time when they will be able to tell you and that you can expect more out of them, but they must be taught and must learn. Parenting is so important and leading and guiding your child is the most important task on this earth. Watching wee William at this tiny stage has taught me again the great importance of patience and the joy of eternal love.

A new baby is completely reliant upon its parents. Eating, being cleaned, helping get gas out, rocking them to sleep all require someone else when they're so new. When you think of the 9 months they're in the womb life is pretty cush and then instantly they are out of it (well almost instantly ;) ). They must learn so much even within the first moments they enter the world.  And it's also a big learning curve for the parents, especially with the first baby. A dear friend of mine recently said, "Being a parent is so wonderful, but no one ever tells you how hard it is!" And that is quite true. Another great person recently stated, "The best things in life can take the longest time and be the hardest to achieve." Things of great worth in this life can be the most difficult. Doesn't that make you appreciate it all the more though? Parenthood is a tough job and the most tiring one on the planet. But it is also the most important of jobs. You are raising another human being, being honored to care for and teach them.

As a new parent you quickly realize that the sweet and beautiful dream of babyness also has a harsh reality of being really tough. You will always have something wet on you whether that's spit up, slobber or milk. There will be moments you go insane from sleep deprivation. Crying seems to be a constant ringing in your ears. You become a walking zombie sometimes. The limits your stretched to can seem impossible at moments. I think it's important to not hide that reality, cause it's real and hey that's what makes it worth it and helps you to know its so important. We always talk about and remember the good of babies and hush the bad, but I truly do think it's so important to talk about both. All of us need support and understanding when going through the stages of babyhood. And when it is hard you can feel overwhelmed and like you are doing it wrong. You see other mothers looking like models, or families going on beautiful trips, or you hear others talk about how "good" their baby is. We all know it's hard, so don't take the time to compare or think you're alone with a colicky baby. Every baby cries, every baby poops, every mommy is sleep deprived....it's just a fact. Don't feel like you have to be perfect, don't feel like you're doing it wrong, and never forget you are of worth and so important! It can be hard when every day you're exhausted and feel like a warn out rag when you finally crawl into bed. But know that every bumb you wipe, every hour you feed, every cry you rock through...you are amazing!

Parents are amazing!!!!!! Bottom line. They work tirelessly to create, protect and raise children of the future. It is the BEST job ever. You are rewarded in smiles, snuggles, first moments, and love. A love that is so strong and deep that it makes you do it again :). So take courage when your little one is being a monster, cause hey, they all are at moments. They are learning and you are to. Take joy in all the moments you're blessed with and know you're not alone.

Dirty Joy

This weekend I had the big task of clearing our grow boxes in the back yard. Most of what I successfully grew this year came in the form of weeds. I sadly did not get to garden as much as I loved my garden last year. I hardly got anything in my harvest this year. And the even sadder part...I weeded each garden like 3 times in hopes of planting and then still grew mostly weeds. I really want to make sure I get the drive to plant an awesome one next year cause I really missed my tomatoes and zucchini this year!

I discovered while pulling up the beastie weeds that resided in my boxes, that these were the perfect play pens for jane!! She was in second heaven playing in the dirt. She'd sprinkle it on her head, smear it down her legs, dump it in her shoes and got it in every nook and cranny. It was quite hilarious when she decided to climb out of it and get cleaned up. She was covered, head to toe. Normally I'm not a humungo fan of letting Jane make huge messes. Every once in a while she gets to put paint all over her, or smears yogurt while eating, but for the most part it's controlled (well as "controlled" as they can be) messes in her high chair. This dirt experience was complete freedom! I didn't tell her to stop, I let her go as long as she wanted and she was filled with dirty joy!

We just had a beautiful women's conference with my church last evening. At it speakers shared amazing talks that uplifted my soul and gave me much to ponder on. My favorite talk was all about happiness and joy. Elder Uchtdorf of the first presidency of our church gave ab incredible message and shared an inspiring story. My favorite quote was, "God didn't design is to be sad. He created us to have joy!" How true that is, and I firmly agree! We are created to joyfully live life. We are meant to joyfully live life. There is great strength that comes from a joyfully lived life. That doesn't mean that your life is buttercups and rainbows. There are still trials, hard days and so forth....but they don't need to be the bulk of life or allowed to be the focus or the stumbling block. We truly are meant to have joy. I love watching my small children experience joy. Wee William has been so full of smiles and coos this month and it warms my heart to see him happy and curious. My Jane learns new words and phrases daily and is starting to pretend. How joyous that makes me, for pretending is one of my fondest pastimes. There really is great joy to be had in this life, good dirty joy!!

Fall Harvest

Have you ever had your tastebuds be so happy it was like you were in heaven? That was me tonight with these amazing fall foods made by some talented women. At the start of the year I began a little cooking club with a few women that are very dear to me and each month we choose a different theme and trade off hosting. We've circled through all of us and each time has been so special and fun. I have found it to be the highlight of each of my months to gather with these women. I even made it to the one that was just a few weeks after Sir William was born because I just could I just couldn't miss being with my favorite ladies. Sharing recipes and good food we have fun chatting and being together way too much. Especially now having two kiddos it is so important and special to get out of the house and be an "adult" every once in a while and talk about adult things and not just about Puffin Rock or one word conversations over and over.

When you become a mother sometimes it can feel very monotonous and routine. The days morf into each other and each is very special but also very long. One of my dear friends of cooking club mentioned how hard it really is being a mother. We all talked about how rewarding and wonderful it is but how much women don't talk about. Postpardem craziness, how much your body goes through, the zombie like state you'll be in for a while, the pains of teething, the joy of tantrums, breastfeeding, etc. there is a lot to being a mom! It literally is the most rewarding, important and difficult job on the planet. You don't receive promotions or have people say thank you or good job after a "project", you don't have a "lunch break" ever!, you always have something wet on you; spit up, spills, tears, boogers, slobber...there's a lot that comes in the mommy package. But it truly is a position I take very seriously and think very highly of. One important thing I have found that helps me stay sane when it gets really hard is events like the Cooking Club. A woman needs time to just be with other women. It is revitalizing and cheering to gather with others who have traveled or are traveling your journey to! To get together and recharge those mommy/woman batteries together really makes a big difference.

The added joy of getting together to just be with these women is the food we get to eat. We love to feed our faces with each others delightful recipes. I have never eaten such delectable foods than at our little cooking club or learned such great tips for the kitchen. This months theme was fall harvest. So of course we had lots of pumpkin! Tis the season of squashes and oh how yummy it is. Pumpkin spice, cinnamon and everything nice comes out in fall foods. I made a plum corn cake that my little family loves. It's a tried and true recipe from TwoPeas&theirPod, and I love it. It's almost just a fancier and yummier version of cornbread. I also brought my plum fruit leather for them to try that I've been working on. I love having a fruit tree in my yard!!!!

Oh how much joy there can be at a table surrounded by people you love filled with amazing foods for you to try. I cherish my little Cooking Club and the thoughts we get to share together as we gather. I treasure these times and look forward to many more. Life is meant to be enjoyed, and good food and company makes it all the better of a journey. Julia Child once said, "People who love to eat are the best people," and I couldn't agree more :).

First Day of Fall

I wanted tonight's dinner to be special and so started prepping food early. The first day of Fall is very special and important to me because it is the start of my favorite season! I love the colors, smells, foods and traditions of this time of year and I await it every summer. As the cooler weather comes, I get a warm feeling in my heart for this cozy time of year. In between baths, playing, feeding chickens, feeding kids, doing laundry, going on walks and collecting sticks and flowers, I prepped our first day of fall meal.

I made a pepper tomato soup, garlic bread, ranch chicken and pumpkin cookies. Jane helped me mix the cookie dough and has fallen in love with chocolate chips. Just like her Bop and mama! It all turned out really yummy and was all finished right as Mister James biked in from work. I love making meals for my family! Right now it's a little hard and overwhelming to do them with two very needy kiddos but when I take the time to do it I am so happy.

How grateful I am that I can conjure up yummy meals for my family and that we are blessed to have food on our table. One thing I love about this time of year most is being THANKFUL. I am thankful all year long but this harvest season adds a special feeling of gratitude in our hearts. I have so much to be thankful for, every one of us do. There are blessings we receive daily in this world. Even when the going gets tough, we have air to breath, the sun comes up each day, the world keeps going round. When we count our many blessings, Angels truly do attend and life is more joyous! How thankful I am for the first day of fall!

Family Time = My favorite time!

Tonight we had dinner outside pit style! My FAVORITE! We roasted some Italian chicken sausages that were so good, made s'mores, and had grapes and veggies. It was a delicious evening of being together! I love being outside and especially when it's with my favoritest people in the world!

Jane was an excellent kindling finder. She got pinecones, dry grass and twigs to help daddy start the fire. Mister James is a pro fire builder. Little William loves being outside and enjoyed some good vitamin D sunshine. He's sure getting to know the world around him and is just adorable. He has a great grin and inquisitive eyes, I love watching him look around and listening to his cooing.

Lately we have been trying to take a really good long walk at the end of our day to tire energy ball Jane out. It's been a really special time when we do it. Tonight we did our little round. We cross over a canal on the way and throw rocks in it to make big splashes and then we run through a huge field to the playground at our neighborhood elementary. It's quite the distance for Jane's little legs but she goes the whole distance! She and William really are so amazing. Children are incredible!! They learn so much, have incredible amounts of patience, and teach us the most important things. How grateful I am for my little family and all the wonderful special times we share together. Life is made up of moments, tons of them, and these are the best ones!

Eye balls...

Remember in my last post I said I'd tell you more about what we did with paint today. This was it! And it cost me all of $1. We collected rocks on a walk and then I had white and glow in the dark paints. The awesome eyeballs are from the dollar store here in town. Jane did a great job helping me paint, which means her paint covered her hands and arms :)! Then she helped me pick out which eyeballs went on each rock. I made a glue dot and she stuck them on. I think they turned out so funny and adorable. Mister James calls them the ancestors of minions. Oh the fun projects you get to do with kids. They make life an adventure everyday!!!

This is the rocks glowing, but you can hardly see them in the photo. They really do glow though, it's super fun!

Do the Hop.

The Happy Hop (scotch)!!! Jane and I have had a day of colors. I love to color and it's so fun to do it with my little gal. She enjoys it but doesn't stick with it too long, the amount of energy contained in little bodies is incredible! She can just bounce (literally) from one thing to the next. Today for our color day we used crayons, paint and chalk!!!

We colored a happy hop scotch outside on the front sidewalk to encourage those walking by to be happy! I love the bright colors of chalk on a dark sidewalk. Then we colored some of our favorite characters from a new little show we love to watch, "Puffin Rock." It is seriously the cutest little show and we love what it teaches her. The illustration/animation is adorable to! Jane loves peeling the paper off of crayons and watching them roll. Then we painted the rocks we had gathered a few days ago and painted them white. They will be shown later, it's a little spooky project we are working on for Halloween! Happy color day!!!

Good Pictures!

We had a wonderful Family Home Evening on this beautiful night. A picnic by the temple and a talk about good pictures. We bought this book when we were first married over 3 years ago, and tonight we shared it with our first child, crazy. It is such an important topic and one we want all our children to have a strong understanding of. The book is awesome, but we did have to simplify major for a not even two year old. James heard from a man who had taken a course from a great professor who helped individuals with pornography addictions. He had stated that you really should start introducing and teaching this subject two years earlier than you think to your children. So we felt it was the time to start with Miss Jane.

Pornogrpahy (bad pictures) really is a growing and addicting in our society. Men and women alike are pressured and targeted. Not only is it unhealthy for body and spirit but it destroys families and individuals. There is a false reality of pleasure, love, sexuality and beauty in inappropriate images. It is not real and it is not lasting. Our children will be subjected at a much earlier age to the great amount of filth that permeates the visual stimulus of the world. They must know how to react upon seeing images that can hurt and ruin their life. Self image is a big piece I feel for young women hat is negatively affected by the mass production of Pornogrpahy. Learning a sense of dignity, self worth, chastity and modesty is so key to raising a strong woman. And then for the young men  there is a whole array of negative results with Pornogrpahy. A young man should be taught the joy of lasting love and real beauty. They should be encouraged to seek women who live and uphold those values and praise them for those efforts. So many of today's children and youth have false ideals and images of what being "cool" and "important" look like. Don't impress by meeting the worlds standard, cause anyone can live the standards of our base society. But it takes something more to live the standard of the Lord. Living the way He has commanded may never be popular but it will be happier and longer lasting.

How grateful I am that the importance of fighting the addiction of Pornogrpahy is being addressed. The children in our world must know earlier about so much adult content they will most likely be introduced to at a young age. They must know how to react and respond to it. I am thankful for a loving Heavenly Father who teaches us the great respect our bodies need and how we can keep them clean! Happy is the one who knows who they are and why they live the way they do.

The Silver Lining

The past two days I've been pretty sick...fair food did some number on this mama. It's been awful. You know that kind of sick where you're going at both ends and you feel like you're going to die,  well that may be a little dramatic but it felt that way at moments. And all day long Jane wanted "horsey" from mommy. James had a long tiring day to say the least doing many a horsey ride, qualming the teething screaming and running around with her. Days like these really wear you out especially when you are still not sleeping at night with a sweet newborn. Lack of sleep really can bring out some things in a person they never thought were there. Dark clouds of doom can brink on the horizon and start crashing thunder, if ones not careful. And sometimes that lightning does crack. But if one remembers all the beautiful silver lining on those dark days it truly does bring sunshine back and peace to the Homefront.

Today I'm feeling a whole heap better and am trying to start up one of my big goals of morning exercises, a silver lining. I sent Mister James off for a daddy daughter doughnut date and then jane and I rolled out the yoga matts. I'm really excited to start up Pilates/Yoga again and hopefully be more consistent this round. I really do love the feeling of being stretched, tired from a good workout and being good to my body. It's always been a hardship of mine to keep weight off and it can sometimes feel like an endless treadmill that never works. But I've decided this time round to not think about the weight necessarily and think more on the feeling it gives my body to be healthy and fit. And also to teach my sweet daughter the importance of keeping healthy, enjoying exercise and loving her body! No matter the size, height, skin tone, color of hair or all the other factors of 'beauty' I want my daughter, and all my children to know that their bodies are amazing! Those are some dark clouds that really try to cloud a woman's perspective in this era of our world. You ARE beautiful and you ARE wonderful! Look for silver lining activities and thoughts to keep you going when the times get tough and dark. There really is ALWAYS some silver lining!!

(He's another one of my silver linings!!)

The Fair!!!

We did it!! We made it to the last and craziest day of the Idaho State Fair! We had been really wanting to go but weren't sure with a new baby and little active Jane if it would work...well we made it work, and we had so much fun!

The food at the fair, I think, is always the favorite part for many. We never made it over for an elephant or tiger ear, but we did get: freshly squeezed raspberry lemonade, a footlong corn dog (why do I love them! Cause I DO!), fresh Idaho potato fries, a turkey leg (Mister James' favorite), a hamburger and an amazing strawberry slushy/smoothie. We loaded up in the liquid treats cause we were all so hot. And they were really delicious!

Jane had SO much fun petting and feeding the animals, she was in HEAVEN! She just giggled and laughed the whole while she was with them. She's a Doolittle at heart. And then she also got to ride two fair rides. I was so looking forward to the Ferris wheel, it's my personal favorite. However, no one under 5 could ride :(, we'll have to wait in that one. But I sent James and Jane on a "balloon" ride and she seemed quite intrigued. We then let her ride the little kid boat ride to and she was adorable. She played with the bell and steering wheel for a short moment because when she realized she was in water her hand went right over the boats edge to splash. It was pretty cute.

Then the biggest reason we did the fair: the Demolition Derbyy!!!! For all my years in college and us living here I had never been to one. James also had never been to one and was more than eager and excited to go watch cars crash into each other. It was really fun and our kids were absolutely amazing! Jane even made a new friend, she does everywhere we go!

We had such a great a time being together for the afternoon and evening. We sure have packed in fun memories during little Williams first weeks of life. This mama is a little worn out, but you can't stop life when you love the train ride. And I really do love life! I'm so thankful for the memories and times I can share with my sweet family. I love them so much!

Remember!!

Today marks 14 years since the U.S. soil was attacked and 1,000's of lives were lost. Many people look back and remember where they were and how they felt when this drastic event occurred. I was in an early morning seminary class where we study from the scriptures when news trickled in that this had happened. At first I was a little confused and just thought that it was a sad event but not a big one. I had never even heard of the Workd Trade Centers and didn't know how serious this was. Then to find out what hey were and the huge planes that hit them, then to hear another plane went down at the pentagon and one in a field in Pennsylvania it was shocking. As a little girl I remember the photos that would get printed in the Seattle Times each morning and feeling a sadness for what had happened.

At a young age I grew a great love for this country and the red, white and blue! I felt a strong national pride for the freedoms we are so blessed with. So to see such a horrendous and wicked act attacking those freedoms and this great nation really affected me. There is great evil in this world, and GREAT goodness to. I think of the firefighters and rescue teams, the brave souls on the plane that went down in PA, the families who lost loved ones that day, the people who served tirelessly to make sure help was given...they all need to be remembered!

Remember is such a powerful word to me. In scripture it is always used in a way to encourage one to remember the past, remember who they are or remember an important event/truth. The dictionary defines it this way:
-have in or be able to bring to one's mind an awareness of (someone or something that one has seen, known, or experienced in the past).
I pray that each of us, no matter where we were that day, even if you weren't born yet, that we remember 9/11. It is so important to not forget the past and to learn from it. May we all remember to protect freedom and honor those who fight for it!

Frames of Purpose

The Gallery Wall is up and running! I have been wanting to get a wall of dedicated pieces up for over a year now. I had the two shelves just waiting to be put up, getting quite dusty in a corner. And I'd pinned so many examples and ideas of these walls on Pinterest.

This week my Mister James helped me get it all up. He was my awesome floating shelf master! I've never hung one of those and would've done it completely wrong had it not been for him. I'm so grateful for my dear husband who has so much on his plate with work, side jobs, school, being a dad and my companion. That he took the time to print and purchase photos and a few frames, help me arrange them, and then hang them up with me meant a great deal. We only have so much time in a day and it truly does show great love to give some of that time away to another. I love my mister and my new gallery wall!

I can't wait to add and change it up over the years with new photos and decor. Having a wall to display family is so important to me. Showing love and dedication to each other is a strong part of being Tight like into a Dish (if you don't know where our family motto is from check out the side bar on the blog!). The things we hang up and focus on in our home should have meaning. Whether that's a fun family photo, or a painting you did, or a place you want to go, or a piece you bought on a family trip...it should serve a purpose. Hang things with a purpose!

Ionic

My wife is awesome. Tonight was the first Idaho Falls Ionic Meetup and she made sure it was a proper gathering. Despite having a very sick daughter and a quite fussy infant and a packed schedule, she prepped yummy vegatable delights and spoiled us with cheese cake! She came with me to setup and then whisked away to walk the kids and put them to bed. How wonderfully blessed I am to have Carolyn be my eternal companion!

About two months ago I got the crazy idea to start a meetup about web development. I was curious to see who would show up. To my surprise 18 people found it interesting enough to join the group and 7 actually made it to the first meeting.

It was a refresher course in public speaking, something that I usually avoid. It was fun to talk shop with other developers in the area though.

Ionic is a web developers tool box for creating iPhone and Android apps. I have had the opportunity to work with it for almost a year now and love what it can do.

The Great TP!

I have yearned to have a play TP for quite some time. The hard thing was all of them cost so much and I couldn't justify it. So I started planning and trying to figure out how to make this dream come true without breaking the bank. I went on trusty Pinterest to get some ideas and found lots. Most were small versions of the one I envisioned. Then I finally fell upon one that I thought would work.

While my mom was here for helping with the new little man the dream finally got sewed. We had planned earlier in the year to work on it but it didn't happen, so I was pretty bound and determined we needed to get it done this time. My sweet mom made a pattern and the work began.

I had bought the wood poles at Lowes for super cheap and then we used old sheets that I had gathered to use for the fabric. So it literally cost just the poles which were like $10. Wahoo!

We have loved playing, eating and having FHE in this great TP. And I think I pretty much made it more for me than the kids ;). I love having a special place to get away and dream. And a TP is the perfect place to do so!

Banana Nutella Cookies

Mmmmm! Go bananas go go bananas! We were headed up last minute to my brother and sister in laws last night and I quickly whipped up this batch of cookies to share. I combined banana bread style cookies with my favorite chocolate spread: Nutella. They were a yummy surprise, and a new recipe we'll be keeping on the shelf for all those ripe brown bananas. Try it out with some of yours!!

The Recipe is as follows;

Ingredients:
3/4 cup shortening or butter
3/4 cup white sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 mashed bananas (3 if they are small)
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
2 cups of flour
A sprinkle of chocolate chips if you desire
Nutella
Walnuts

Instructions:
Cream the shortening and sugar, add egg, vanilla and mashed bananas. Make sure that it is creamed very well. Add in salt, soda and flour slowly so it will be homogeneous. Add your sprinkle of chocolate chips here! The badder will be more like the consistency of brownie batter (don’t worry, they will hold their shape). Bake them in an oven heated to 350 degree for 8-9 minutes, until the bottoms are golden brown.

Then smear delicious Nutella on top and sprinkle some walnuts to add a yummy crunch. They are so scrumptious and will have you going bananas for more!!
