NW Day 5

Jane and I got to venture to the Spencer's!! James' older brother, Anthony, lives in WA and it was so fun to visit with his sweet family and see their new abode. It's like a treehouse cabin! And they've decorated it so cozy!

I loved watching Jane play with her fun cousin Evelyn. She was adorable and had told Krystal she wanted to "match baby Jane." She shared all her blocks, toys and even army crawled with Jane! It was adorable.

It was so wonderful to catch up with them in person. Skype is great and all, but the real deal is soooo much better! They are a great family!!!

Then we had some fun play time with Grammy before falling asleep! That old rocking horse was a hit! How fun Grammy and Bops house is!

Now we need some good luck fairy dust for a long 14 hour drive to UT!!!!!!!

NW Day 4

Today at church Jane got to meet Theodocia!! It was so fun to see her interaction and so sweet to see how tender she was with her. Theo is a family friend that my mother took in when we first moved here. She struggles a great deal with people and especially children, but has always been so sweet to our family as we've grown up. I was so excited for her to meet Jane and see how Theo would act with her. She was so sweet with her and even let her play with her purse. It was so special for me to witness this sweet moment and warmed my heart a great deal.

Today was my sisters birthday and so we wore the party hats we all cut out. Jane and her cousin Kade weren't quite sure what to think of them.

My sweet sister Lara brought Jamberries so we all did some toenail painting together. It was fun to try the new fad of the sticker nails ;), we all agreed they were more work than just painting them. I love doing fun things like this with my sistas. I can't wait to post pictures about James' duck hunting birthday party also. It was fun fun!!

NW Day 3

Jane and I visited Bops Ranch today and enjoyed seeing all the animals in the rain.

We got to see the chickens, horses, alpacas, and the cows. And Jane got a ride on the Gator. Bop loves showing off his work to his Grandkids!

Then I got to make a bunch of little "Party Animals" for Mollys birthday. They are so cute, I need to make a little set for me ;).

In the evening we got to go to my dear friend Jessica Beans wedding! I met her husband, Gary, saw a lot of amazing people I grew up with and enjoyed hearing special words at a wedding. I loved the thoughts said about marriage. Especially the fact on continuing to date one another, for the husband to be more deaf and the wife to be more blind ;), and to wake up each morning wanting to be the best spouse every day! I love weddings, and this was a special one to be at!!

NW Day 2

Jane got to experience a classic Seattle day; rain! We went on an adventure to my all time favorite park, Farrel McWhirter. It feels like a National Park and is beautiful!

We explored the barn where the kiddos saw a giant pig, goats, bunnies and sheep. It was so fun to be out in the wetness!

The colors of WA are incredible, check out that moss!

Miss Nora was helping Jane walk around the house. So sweet and special cousin time. I love these two little ladies.

For dinner we celebrated miss Mollys birthday. She had lots of beautiful details and mom made an amazing salad to accompany pizza. My family sure makes food and birthdays special.

The ending of the day was attending my home Church Wards Friday of crafts/classes. Lara and I took our babes in arm and joined in the AMAZING Elsie's chocolate making class and then I sneaked in to Janalee Leavitt/Tauyna Covingtons class on sharing the message of Christ during Christmas in your home and to others. It was a fun, and yummy, evening.

NW Day 1

We started our first day off right here in the Pacific Northwest by going on a morning walk! Grammy is so good and tries to exercise each morning, so we joined her. I LOVE this "Monet Bridge" that's in our neighborhood and just had to show Jane!

She enjoyed Cheerios as mom and I caught up and talked about things we've been up to. Little moments like this are my all time FAVORITE!! I wish life would slow down more for moments like this. They are so special! I love being outdoors, especially when with some of my favorite people (minus my Mr.James! who I'm already missing).

Jane has never seen such huge trees or big leafs before. And oh does the Northwest air smell and feel good! It is amazing after living in Idaho so long I had forgotten how hilly, wet and forested this beautiful place is!

In the afternoon I had the luck to go and visit my favorite co-workers I have ever had!!!!!!!! Packaging Specialties is my all time favorite little shop, Jane quite enjoyed the wrapping paper tubes and pointing at all the ribbon. Joan, Lexi and Alverna (3 of my Faves!) were all there!! It was so fun to have them meet Jane!! And to catch up with them in their lives! I love these women!

Long Travels

Traveling homebound to my apple state of WA was quite the adventure!!!!!! Jane and I left Idaho Falls on a shuttle bus at 10 am and did not land in Seattle till 9:30 pm. It was a loooooooooooong day. Jane only slept for maybe 45 minutes throughout the day and traveled really well. She was an angel!

Especially because we sat waiting in the airport for 5 hours!!!!! Yep, you heard me right...5 hours in an airport with a 10 month old. We walked the airport a ton, ate tons of snacks, went through a few diapers and an 2 outfits. All the others waiting got to know Jane and I really well.

My favorite people we got to know was a cute older couple that sat and read their books the whole time. They were so sweet to each other and just adorable. While Jane was walking around, with the help of my fingers, for the 20th time..the older woman said to me, "She's the kind of baby that gives hope to old people like us! She's well mannered, curious, behaved and good natured." So sweet and made my day! I'm so proud of Jane and the traits that she exhibits!

The flight was quick and Jane loved pulling the window flap down, playing peekaboo over the seat, pushing up and down the tray, tapping the window and looking at everything.

She finally was able to crash in the car as Aunt Molly drove us home! Long day, and so glad to be home for a few special days!

Thankfulness

There is so much to be grateful and thankful for in this world. Each year we have the tradition of writing in leafs things we are thankful for. It's a wonderful way to be reminded about the bounteous blessings we have. This branch was found when I was pushing little 4 month old Jane in her stroller. A neighbor had cut down a beautiful white birch tree and I gathered a few stumps and this branch. That special "giving tree" provided the wood to make a little summer table/bench, a wooden bowl for a wedding gift to my brother, and now it provided the branch for our thankful tree!

I am so thankful for this tradition, I'm thankful for my little family, I'm thankful for our warm and cozy home, I'm thankful for a hardworking husband, I'm thankful for holidays, I'm thankful for toilets (seriously, I am!), I'm thankful for music, I'm thankful for a body, I'm thankful for chocolate, I'm thankful for hats, I'm thankful for water, I'm thankful for a living prophet.....I could go on and on and on and on.....but I'll just end with saying I have much to be thankful for. And I bet if you pause and think about it, you do to!

I love this time of year!!!! Don't you!?

Flakey and Delectable!

I discovered a fool proof flakey biscuit recipe and it was AWESOME! James was in high heaven and grateful he came home for lunch today. They were SO easy and SO delectable! I found the recipe here:

http://traceysculinaryadventures.com/2013/03/foolproof-flaky-buttermilk-biscuits.html

And some flakey yummy biscuits had to be accompanied by a warm chili. This was an adaptation from a family favorite that our dear friends the Beans make, Lightening Chili. It is so delicious! We had a bunch of dried beans so we took the time to soak and cook all those (my first time really ever doing that), and then threw all the yummies in with them. I LOVE a good soup and bread on a winter day!

Oh, and check it out......our first real snow day here in Idaho!!! Hopefully it doesn't keep all the ladies from coming to the Relief Society Activity we planned for tonight!

Are you a Zombie?

So this is a really random post title, especially because I am one who is not into the zombie movies, shows, apocalypse and whatever else is zombie popular right now. I've watched one with Mr James (cause you know, as wives we do that, and hey he watches all my Jane Austen's and Musicals). And after watching I still didn't get sucked into the craze our Zombie obsessions. However, last night in the three hours of sleep I got, I had a nightmare about Zombies.

It was a really frightening dream. Here it is, all I can remember: James and I were gathered together with a huge crowd. It was a mandatory political meeting that we were pretty much forced to be at. They gathered us all into a big tent and had us all sit on mats. Hundreds of people filled this huge canvas tent and we were all being watched by government personnel. Then a giant screen rolled down and a speaker said, " There are three stages we are going to take you through. They are very easy and we need to make sure you make it to step three..." Then a video of Mozart music came on, but it had dub step sounds added into all his pieces. This was now ALL music. Classical, country, folk, alternative, rock...all of it now had dub step. So, step #1 was to make sure all music was loud, that it had constant heavy beats and that you believed that was the only kind of music. Step #2 was learning the dance moves that accompanied this type of music. And then Step #3 was to give us all a shots that turned us into zombies. As Step #1 began James and I were discussing how we needed to escape. As we ran towards the canvas tent edge to get out I awoke...

This may seam like a weird thing to write about and a silly dream. And maybe it is/was. But when I woke up and told James about it his first response was, "Well I guess the worlds to step three almost." And that got us to talking. There is such a craze for loud and inappropriate music. Do we listen to the words, the values of these so called "Hits?" They mostly all are immoral. They all are noisy. They all kind of become the same. Then, do we notice the music video dancing. Do we care how our children dance at school/church dances? Do we make our lives imitate the popular culture of our time?

We really do chameleon what we hear, watch and spend time on. Is it good? Is it enriching our world? Is it instilling us with values that will lift society or bring it down? There is great importance in not becoming a "zombie" society that feeds off of the media and societal fads. Society needs to remember the importance of being still. The crucial importance of good music. The severity of inappropriate images. The need for a higher way of thinking and working hard.

There is so much good in the world. I'm grateful for that good. I hold onto that good. I pray for more good. I strive to be good...and when I fall short I realize how easy it can be to get sucked into the "what's popular." Strive to watch yourself, cause this world needs more thinkers, more doers, more modesty, more caring, more of all that is good!

Fairest of them All...

A few weeks ago I spoke to the Young Women of my church ward. I had made notes of what to say and then veered off of them for a good portion of my talk. It's amazing how the Spirit can direct you on a different topic then you had planned. Hopefully one person there that night needed what I said, even if it was just me. The theme of the evening was "The Cinderella Ball" and making it to the temple. I was requested to talk about getting to the temple and preparing for marriage. So here is my talk, well not exactly what was said ;) but a pretty good outline!

The fairy tale phrase that kept coming to my mind upon preparing this talk was the classic phrase of "Mirror, mirror on the wall, Who's the fairest of them all?" In the world we live in today is that not the focus of many women? How can we be the prettiest, most popular, fashionable....the list could go on and on. But in the end that is not the right focus of the question and the right person you want to be looking out of the mirror at you. Elder Uchtdorf gave an amazing talk a few years ago titled, "happily ever after" in this he stated,

"I want to draw your attention to something very significant, very extraordinary. On the first page of your Young Women Personal Progress book, you will find these words: “You are a beloved daughter of Heavenly Father, prepared to come to the earth at this particular time for a sacred and glorious purpose.”

Sisters, those words are true! They are not made up in a fairy tale! Isn’t it remarkable to know that our eternal Heavenly Father knows you, hears you, watches over you, and loves you with an infinite love? In fact, His love for you is so great that He has granted you this earthly life as a precious gift of “once upon a time,” complete with your own true story of adventure, trial, and opportunities for greatness, nobility, courage, and love. And, most glorious of all, He offers you a gift beyond price and comprehension. Heavenly Father offers to you the greatest gift of all—eternal life—and the opportunity and infinite blessing of your own “happily ever after.”But such a blessing does not come without a price. It is not given simply because you desire it. It comes only through understanding who you are and what you must become in order to be worthy of such a gift."

True beauty comes from loving you for who you are, a daughter of God!! And making sure that you are seeking ETERNAL HAPPINESS! Where does happiness, real happiness come from? A woman that is on my list of "fairest of them all" is Audrey Hepburn. She is a woman of class and beauty. She is quoted as saying, "Happy girls are the prettiest!" Preparing for the temple and being worthy to enter its sacred walls start you on the path of eternal happiness. I sing the words, "I love to see the temple, I'm going there someday..." To Jane each night. How does one prepare to enter the house of the Lord? You must come to KNOW the Lord! When you feel comfortable in someone's home you've taken the time to get to know them. Do they like you to take your shoes off by the door? Do they enjoy family meal time? Do they have a tv on at all times?

When growing up I had a dear friend, Teresa, one time she invited me over to her home for the first time. I was so excited. At the time I was using crutches because I had broken my ankle. When I got to her home I noticed there were plastic liners covering the carpeted stairs and everything had its place. We went downstairs and began to play. Before we left that room her mother came in with a disapproving look and asked Teresa to go around and rub my crutches marks from out of the carpet. I felt awful. If I had known that would make my dear friend have to rub the whole floor down I wouldn't have used them.  The Lord wants you to feel prepared to enter into sacred covenants with him in His holy house. The Lord does not want you to feel uncomfortable in His home. He wants you to feel welcome and like you are at home! This is why your own homes need to emulate the temple so you feel at peace and a familiarity  with the spirit of the temple. You should not feel like an unwelcome guest or a bothersome visitor. When you think about the story, "The Princess and the Pea" what comes to mind? The huge stack of mattresses with one small pea. The queen and prince know that if the young lady feels the pea then she's a true princess. Are we noticing the imperfections we may have that keep us from our royal heritage? Are we repenting and preparing ourselves to be pea-free when we enter His home? Don't allow the world to cloud the knowledge of who you are! Focus on those things that matter most.

Elder Uchtdorf said,

"Sisters, young sisters, beloved young sisters, stay true to what you know is right. Everywhere you look today, you will find promises of happiness. Ads in magazines promise total bliss if you will only buy a certain outfit, shampoo, or makeup. Certain media productions glamorize those who embrace evil or who give in to base instincts. Often these same people are portrayed as models of success and accomplishment.

In a world where evil is portrayed as good and good as evil, sometimes it is difficult to know the truth. In some ways it is almost like Little Red Riding Hood’s dilemma: when you are not quite sure what you are seeing, is it a beloved grandmother or is it a dangerous wolf?"

There are mirrors ALL throughout the temple. When you are married you have two mirrors and you can only see your companion forever!!! As you put others first, especially the Lord, you will find out who the fairest of them all is. For eternal happiness comes in the temple and thus eternally beautiful women prepare themselves to go there! Being the fairest of them all means you are living a life worthy of the beauty of temple covenants. You are living the highest standard among women.

The greatest decision and the highest covenant you will make is when you are married. Eternal happiness is achieved as you work hard and commit to a man to covenant with each other in the temple. In every fairytale there is the dashing prince. All princes are different and all princesses are to for that matter. When you think about your prince what are the things that matter to you in them? Are they vain qualities that make him fair to look at or is their depth to this dream man? And are you preparing yourself for him? I made a list in one of my Personal Progress Projects of the things I desired in my frog prince. And James meets all of them! I did not know this until after I married him though. I think sometimes we need to learn that a spouse is not perfect but that you both become perfected as you journey together! It takes work! When you think of all the princesses they had to struggle and work. Bell sacrificed her home and family to live with a beast to save her father. Sleeping Beauty missed out on growing up with her parents. Cinderella washed and cleaned tirelessly and had lost her father. But each of them strived to discover their talents, rise above their challenges and discover the good. In marriage and life it takes work to be happy. In our world if things aren't working out eternal goals and happiness are thrown by the wayside. I'm sure the Beast didn't all of a sudden eat just right. Being patient and loving in a marriage is crucial, and the covenants of the temple will bless and strengthen you!

How many of you have read, really read and studied, the Strength of Youth Pamphlet? Those values and standards are a guide to the life you need to live in order to start on your temple path! They are not old fashioned or out of date, they are true!! Don't shift your standards to match the worlds because their standards are false. They never lead to lasting happiness or feeling really good about yourself! When you are living a life worthy of the temple you are HAPPY! When you can answer to the Lord "I am clean" what a blessing that is!!!

As you live the standards of the gospel and prepare yourselves for entering the holy temple “[you] will be prepared to strengthen home and family, make and keep sacred covenants, receive the ordinances of the temple, and enjoy the blessings of exaltation.” This is where your happily ever after comes to be reality. And where you discover that happy girls are the prettiest.

Tomato Soup

Our very last garden tomatoes have been put to use. I decided on this lovely fall afternoon it was high time to get rid of all the tomato bowls I had around the kitchen. So of course homemade soup came to mind. There is really nothing better (well maybe hot cocoa ;)), than a bowl of delicious soup and a melted cheese sandwich on a chilly day.

After being in the computer a while doing design work, little Lady Jane woke up. I cut her up some cheese and gave her some yummy pear/raspberry applesauce and began my soup making while she ate. It was fun cutting up all those home grown tomatoes and thinking about how fun it was to have a garden! I can't wait to plant again next year and see what delicious things we can make again.

We really want to be better at canning so that we really can enjoy our garden all year long! Maybe next year we can get Soup stowed away for winter and some Marinera sauces!  Mmmmm fall is a yummy time of year!!

Caramel Pumpkindoodles

Mmmmmmmm. These were a little bite of spicey goodness! I had some left over pumpkin purée and really wanted something cinnamony and so this little recipe was a must!

We had extra caramel pieces from making our Halloween caramel apples and so I decided to slip those into the dough as well. And oh did it make them sinfully delicious!

Don't you just adore this time of year! All the smells, tastes, holidays, crispness of the air....it's the most wonderful time of the year!!

If you need a delightful cookie to enjoy, you'll not be disappointed with this fluffy Caramel Pumpkindoodle!

Recipe below:

(Caramel) Pumpkindoodles

Makes 18 cookies
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1/4 cup pumpkin puree
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 large eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
Pinch of salt
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
**If you have some sitting around cut up caramels in to little pieces and mix into to dough at the very end of all the instructions, mmmmm.
Preheat your oven to 325°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment or a Silpat.
In the bowl of a stand mixer (or in a large bowl with a hand mixer), cream together butter, the sugars, and the pumpkin puree until it's smooth. Mix in the eggs one at a time.
In a separate bowl, stir together flour, tartar, baking soda, and salt. Slowly stir in the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture. Mix it just enough to combine the ingredients, but try not to over mix the cookie dough.
In a small bowl, stir together sugar, cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. (And if you want to add a dash of Pumpkin Spice go for it, the more flavor the better in my book :) ).
Measure out heaping tablespoons of dough. Roll the cookie dough into a ball and then roll it in the sugar mixture. Place the rolled cookie on the baking sheet. Repeat until the dough is gone. You should get about 18 medium-sized cookies out of the batch.
Bake the cookies for 11 to 12 minutes until they are slightly puffed and golden brown around the edges. Let the cookies cool before serving. Keep extra cookies in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Give Thanks

This year we carved a Thanksgiving pumpkin! I think this may become a new tradition for our carving time. There really is so much to be thankful for and I'm grateful the season of Thanksgiving has begun.

Grateful for: big leaf piles and dinner in a pumpkin!!
